Don: I recently watched the US Women’s National Team play against Vietnam. Despite their victory, some critics have said that the American women’s team didn’t perform well. Simo Idrissi, what’s your technical opinion on this?
Simo Idrissi: Thank you for having me, Don, and for providing SCPPNews platform where we can discuss and share our thoughts on soccer. As I mentioned in one of my previous SCPPNews articles, I believed that the American team would outperform the Vietnamese’s women national team, and this was no coincidence. There are several factors that come into play when evaluating a team’s performance, starting with the game’s cultures and traditions. If the team units are balanced, then the team is more likely to win. This has been known since the beginning of soccer. Now the USWNT’s Victory Against Vietnam and I can speak freely. My extensive experience has taught me how to evaluate individual players and teams on the field. I understand the differences between individuals and teams, as well as how teams represent their respective countries’ local championships. The US women national team is strong in this world cup 2023, but there are other strong teams as well. We should not judge a team’s performance based solely on games that has not yet been played. For instance, I can watch just the first ten minutes of any game and determine its value because a coach must be able to evaluate live performance simultaneously. My experience watching both US women’s and men’s national teams’ games, as well as professional and semi-professional games, has given me insight into American soccer’s strengths and weaknesses. I am also grateful to the United States Soccer Federation and National Coaches Soccer Association for providing us with the correct information to develop our knowledge in soccer game, which has helped me better understand American soccer philosophy.
